Kate’s 32!!!

Happy birthday Kate, you’re 32 years old! It seems like only 3 years ago that you turned 29 and cried because it meant you were only one year away from being 30! I love you!!!

Wheeler Christmas in Pictures…

So, we had a lovely holiday! Christmas Eve we spent with Chris’s family in Muscatine (though we missed the Laughead get together which we are very sad about… sorry guys!!). Christmas day was spent in West Liberty with my family. The kids were happy with all of their gifts and I think we all had a great time!

MERRY THRAPMAS!!!

It’s that wonderful time of the year when the Thraps travel down to Muscatine for the beginning of the Christmas holiday and we get them FIRST so we can celebrate our little group Christmas together! They arrived last night and even though we worried about getting the kids hyped up, we decided to go ahead and do presents!!!

My kids made out like BANDITS!!! Audrey got a cute frame for her room and a DS game…

Chris got some new CROCS for when he is done with nursing school (we are SO excited about that in just ONE MORE YEAR!!!) and Kate got her favorite… a Hobby Lobby gift certificate AND an eNV!!! The HL gc is from Becca and the phone was a group gift from Chris AND the Thraps! I am THRILLED!

Now, we got the Thrap family a GROUP gift this year because we knew there was something that their whole family was REALLY, REALLY wanting. This summer on a fluke run to Best Buy the guys found this game called “SingStar” for PS2. It’s kind of like karaoke but with the music videos and the real songs. We fell in LOVE! We also went out and purchased the SingStar Pop, SingStar 80’s, SingStar 90’s, and Josh got SingStar Rocks throughout the summer! The only downside was that the Thraps did NOT have a PS2, so when we would visit we would lug ours and whenever they would visit us we would SingStar it up! Sooooo… when I was perusing Craigslist this fall and came across somone selling their PS2 system, I thought… HEY… I could get ALL of the Thraps just ONE present instead of trying to find something individual for all of them! So, last night, they happily opened their Christmas present from the Wheelers! A PS2 system, the two games that they had purchased (that we had been housing since we were the ones with the PS2) AND an EXTRA set of the microphones for the game!!!

I think it was a Merry Thrapmas Christmas for EVERYONE!!!

Our TRRFCC KID!

So, we got a call Sunday night from Michael’s teacher telling us that she has nominated Michael for the “E for Effort” award at school! She told us that there would be a school wide assembly where Michael would receive his award and that we were welcome to attend. Chris and I cleared our schedules and braved the weather to get to Kirkwood Elementary. It was an amazing moment for us and for Michael when his name was called and he ran up to the front of the gym surprised and VERY proud of himself!

Michael is such a wonderful kid (as is his sister, of course) and we are so excited about the progress he’s been making at school and his own life! He is definitely TRRFCC!

I apologize for the grainy pictures, but we were really far in the back of the gym!

It’s starting to feel a little bit like Christmas…

So tonight we took some time to set up the Christmas tree! We found some Christmas music and pulled out our Craigslist tree that I sustained moderate injuries and humiliation for and set it up. I must admit that I was dubious about having a fiber optic tree because I thought it would look cheap and silly, but we were all pleasantly surprised that having a fiber optic tree negates having to have lights which is just easier anyway!

We had lots of fun going through our ornaments and talking about where they come from. It was really neat for Chris and I to hang up our “First Christmas Together 1997″ and for each of the kids to hang up their “Baby’s First Christmas” ornaments.

After the tree was up, the kids wanted to pretend like it was Christmas day and have me take pictures of them jumping around excited and then taking pictures of them pretending to make snow angels in our carpet (which, of course, was pretending to be snow).

What is NOT fun…

That would be supernannying your almost 10 year old for bedtime. Michael, love him dearly, and he has improved SO much from even just a year ago, but we need to nip this bedtime battle in the bud. So, here is goes. I put him to bed an hour ago and his first time out I told him it was bedtime and took him right back to bed. His second time out I told him it was bedtime and took him right back to bed. His third time out I took him right back to bed. This then brought on a battle of how many times he could get out of bed to get me to talk to him. When that didn’t work 15 times, he resorted to crying about how his mom hates him. Ugh. That’s hard to push through because I wanted so much to explain that I do love him, but he has to get to bed. So, instead of talking, I hugged him and put him back to bed. However, that just got me about 5 more times of getting out of bed and crying about how his mom still hates him.

Chris is about crawling out of his skin. I really appreciate him trying to work through this and trust my reasons even though he may not agree it’s what we should do. Wish us luck!

Our first REAL vacation… in progress…

So, probably a month ago Chris mentioned the Throwdown on the River BBQ at the Grand Harbor Resort in Dubuque and said that they were offering discounted rooms for BBQ judges. I dismissed it at the time, but Chris said that it would count as a vacation. So we decided it was a good enough deal to give it a go and our first real FAMILY vacation was in effect!

We left Saturday morning bright and early, though two hours behind schedule. We made our way to Dyersville to the one (and apparently only) Basillica in Iowa, St. Francis Xavier DubuqueVaca08 019.JPG which was beautiful. We did not stay long however, because there was a wedding that day and in fact, while we were inside the bride and groom were seeing each other for the first time that day to take their pictures, it was a very sweet moment DubuqueVaca08 026.JPG .

Next we drove up the road to the Field of Dreams Movie Set! Here we are on the road (really, I stuck my hand out the window) DubuqueVaca08 044.JPG and then at the site DubuqueVaca08 051.JPG . Both Michael DubuqueVaca08 064.JPG and Audrey DubuqueVaca08 068.JPG got to take a swing and run the bases DubuqueVaca08 076.JPG DubuqueVaca08 080.JPG and even check for baseball player ghosts in the corn DubuqueVaca08 074.JPG . It was great fun, but we had more places to see! We drove a little while longer to make it to our destination of Dubuque! Our first stop there was at the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium DubuqueVaca08 094.JPG but right as we got there a trolley DubuqueVaca08 093.JPG showed up offering tours of downtown Dubuque so we hopped on DubuqueVaca08 107.JPG and enjoyed the tour. It returned us to the museum and we made our way in to enjoy the exhibits. We saw all sorts of cool things, but one of my favorites was the alligators DubuqueVaca08 137.JPG who were proud of their alligator love! The kids really liked the venom exhibit where there was a special rattlesnake viewing exhibit where they became the “prey” DubuqueVaca08 163.JPG . Michael took a small break and sat down with Mark Twain DubuqueVaca08 193.JPG where I’m sure they discussed the Book of Mormon. And, just to prove it, I was here too DubuqueVaca08 204.JPG . After the museum we went to the Fenelon Place Elevator DubuqueVaca08 213.JPG to take a frightening ride on the world’s shortest and steepest scenic railway DubuqueVaca08 215.JPG . Chris, Michael, and Audrey thought it was awesome, but I was terrified the entire time, although it was a beautiful view DubuqueVaca08 223.JPG . After that we made our way to our motel. Now, we made reservation with the Grand Harbor resort for Sunday night with the discount, but we decided to save some money by staying at a motel on Saturday night. It was most definitely a dive, but hey, it had two beds, a toilet, and a tv so we tried not to complain too much!

Today we packed up early and made our way over to the resort DubuqueVaca08 388.JPG so that Chris could get registered for the BBQ contest and so the kids and I could enjoy the WATER PARK DubuqueVaca08 306.JPG As Chris judged the contest the kids and I hung out at the water park which was HUGE and looked a lot like a ginormous playplace with water! Audrey’s favorite part was this HUGE Bucket high atop the entire structure that would fill with water and then spill out onto patrons below DubuqueVaca08 317.JPG while Michael seemed to love the inside/outside DubuqueVaca08 277.JPG water slide where you ride on an inner tube down a water slide that loops OUTSIDE of the building, here is Audrey and Michael at the bottom of that slide DubuqueVaca08 279.JPG . Finally our room was ready, so the kids and I took our bags upstairs to our VERY nice room on the TOP floor (the kids were VERY excited about that) and then went outside to the BBQ competition to partake in the kids activities of crafts DubuqueVaca08 366.JPG and a rock climbing wall DubuqueVaca08 387.JPG DubuqueVaca08 381.JPG . We are now in our cushy room enjoying the BEAUTIFUL view of downtown Dubuque watching the news of Gustov  . Chris and the kids are talking about heading back to the water park soon, so I better wrap up!

I know a dude’s ear that swallowed a fly

And that dude was me.

I don’t know that swallow is the right word. But whatever, I had a fricking fly in my ear. Do you hear me? A FLY IN MY EAR!

I was sitting here at the computer last night taking a quick study break and there was this huge fly on the computer monitor. I flicked it away a few times because it was annoying me. Well, I guess that annoyed him because he flew into my ear. I’m not talking about flying and landing on my ear and just crawling in. He freaking flew straight into my ear. FLEW INTO MY EAR!

Now, when it first happened, I actually thought he had flown away, because I was feeling around my earlobe and stuff thinking it landed there and I was going to flick him (I’m not sure why I am assuming it was a boy fly) away again, but he wasn’t there, so I thought he was gone. Over the next 5 minutes I kept hearing an intermittent buzzing sound like he was real close by so I kept swatting the area near my ear to get him away. Then I got up to get a Q-tip (yes brand name, no generic cotton swabs for me) and stuck it in to clean out my ear when… well, I guess what I did was piss the little fetcher off, because he started buzzing like a madfly. Buzz buzz buzz, flapping his little wings trying to annoy me (or escape). I didn’t know what to do; I started freaking out. I started shaking my head violently trying to somehow get him to fly out, but all that was doing was making me dizzy. So I sat down on the bed and called Kate and was trying to decide if I needed to go to the ER or something.

So you know when you get out of the shower or pool and you have a little water in your ear, so you kinda bend your head sideways so the water can drain out. I decided that is what I was going to do next. So I’m bent over, and I’m trying to talk to Kate on the phone, and I’m trying to stay calm, and then I start banging on my freaking head trying to get the little bugger out. I’m pounding on my head, and talking to Kate, and I don’t remember exactly what I told her, but I was telling her something, and I’m banging on my head some more as hard as I physically can, and the bastage falls out, straight down onto the floor. He kinda just walked around on the floor for a minute and I assumed he was going to fly away, but 30 minutes later he was still there walking around, so I trapped him in a jar so he could die. This morning I checked and he was sufficiently dead for me so I decided to talk a picture on my phone, so here is he is…

fly.jpg

So I told Kate that finally he came out, and I was really relieved, but then I had the HUGEST KILLER HEADACHE from pounding on my head, which kinda interfered with my studying for the rest of the night.
