Six game skid

Man, the Cubs started out the season ok, but now they’re on a six game losing streak. I think the main difference between when they were doing good, and now, is when they were doing good, I was watching the games on TV, but I’ve been too busy lately. They must not feel my positive energy anymore. So to all you Cubs fans out there, I apologize.

Let the Games begin!

Tonight is the Opening Ceremonies for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. I love the Olympics. I am addicted to all things Olympic. I don’t like hockey, generally don’t watch figure skating, and don’t understand curling, but I will watch them for hours and hours.

I love the idea that for two weeks, athletes will come from all over the world to compete against each other in a peaceful setting. I love to see the pride in the Olympians as they are awarded their medals while their national anthems play, to know that all the years they spent training for that moment were not in vain. I love to hear the crowds cheer for their fellow countrymen. Of course, I love all of this even more when it is Americans winning the medals. The Olympics are where national heroes are born, and I love it.

The Hawkeyes are for real

The Michigan-Iowa game today was just unbelievable. Iowa won 94-66. The Hawkeyes were exceptional in just about every aspect of the game. Everyone was moving well, we were finding open people, and just could not miss. Henderson had a couple 3-pointers in a row. Haluska was on fire. Even Alex Thompson had a couple impressive baskets in the 2nd half. The turning point in the game of course was the hard screen that bloodied Jeff Horner’s nose. A little dirty perhaps, Brown pretty much shouldered him. Who cares? Horner came back. This guy is tough.

Iowa should definitely crack back in to the Top 25 again. If they keep playing well over the last few weeks, they ought to get a pretty good seed in the NCAA tournament.

Another Hawkeye Loss

Man, these close losses are killing me. The first two losses of the season were complete blowouts. The next two losses came down to the wire, with the Michigan loss even coming in overtime. I’m not sure which is harder. I know Michael and Audrey were very upset and were tearing up after the loss. OK, I was too. This week won’t be much easier, traveling up to Madison. Wisconsin is really good this year. We’ll see what happens.

Heartbreaking Home Loss

Man, what a game today. Unfortunately the Hawkeyes did not prevail, losing 23-20 to Michigan in overtime. It looks like the blocked field goal was the difference here.

The thing that really made this loss so hard to take is the amount of penalties committed called on Iowa. Before today’s game they were flagged 20 times in 7 games. Today alone they had eleven. Some of them really hurt. There were pass interferences called on Iowa when there shouldn’t have been. To be fair, not all of the bad calls went against Iowa. How about that “fumble” that went under the instant replay review. The Michigan ball carrier was clearly in possession of the ball when it hit the ground; in fact, it could clearly be seen that the ground caused the fumble. It should have been Michigan ball, especially after the replay didn’t show “indisputable video evidence” as required by the Big Ten’s instant replay rules. If anything, the video replays should have made it even more obvious that Michigan did not fumble the ball.

Really in the end though, the reason Iowa lost, I think, was too many incomplete passes. I think QB Drew Tate looked really good through most of the game. But when you have perfectly thrown passes getting dropped by wide open receivers, that hurts. And when one of your best receivers lets a ball slip through his hands and get intercepted, that really hurts. You’ve got to hand it to Michigan though, they’ve really stepped it up against some tough teams this year, and taken more than their fair share of games down to the wire.

I just read on HawkeyeSports.com that Iowa is 0-3 when playing on ABC this year. It looks like if we want to keep winning we need to stick with being televised on ESPN+
